Ciao and welcome to 'Italian with Anna'

I'm guessing you're visiting this page as you have an interest in Italian language and/or culture?
If this is the case, you've come to the right place! Italian with Anna is about learning both in a fun and enjoyable way.

'Italian with Anna' is a weekly dose of live 35 minute online sessions where you'll increase your Italian vocabulary and grammar knowledge, as well as learning about aspects of Italian culture as you go along.

'It’s about taking your time to learn and enjoy Italian over time without any pressure or deadlines.'

We look at all sorts of topics, including basics such as greetings, numbers, colours, days of the week and months of the year. We learn the touristy stuff such as directions, booking a table in a restaurant, train travel and ordering food. We look at recipes, news articles, TV shows, songs, sports – all sorts!
Lessons are delivered via PowerPoint and then slides are emailed out after each session. We do a lot of speaking and listening activities around these slides (but don’t worry, you won’t be ‘put on the spot’ unless you want to be!).

A little bit about me

With an English mum and a Maltese dad, I was born and raised in the Northeast of England. Although I was regularly exposed to Maltese during holidays in Malta and also in listening to my dad on the phone to his family, unfortunately I didn’t learn to speak it myself. Nevertheless, I’m almost certain this is how my passion for languages began.

After completing a BA Hons in French & Italian Studies at Lancaster University in 1996, I then went on to work in international sales (for a seafood company – random – but an opportunity to use my languages!) before doing a PGCE in secondary school teaching. I subsequently taught French, Italian (and dance!) for 10 years.

A change of career followed, still in education and still involving language, when I became an Advisor, supporting schools with their provision for pupils for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL). This work (which I still do) is all about enabling pupils to access the school curriculum at the same time as learning English. For example, pupils learn science via English and English via science, and the same for other subjects.

This work continues to influence my teaching of Italian in that I try to make it as accessible as possible to everyone, with a focus on speaking and listening, alongside visible vocabulary and images to support.

Sessions are open to anyone in any part of the world. All you need is a very basic level of English (and an interest in Italian, of course!)
